In The Spirit

An original web series hosted and created by Eve Turow for The Village Voice, running 2012 to 2013, that explored the creating and burgeoning craft beverage industry of New York City. From underground absinthe distilleries to shore-side fermentation of Caribbean hibiscus tea, Eve takes the viewer on a journey through the boroughs to discover a world of brews, tinctures, and sodas waiting to be tapped and poured.

Behind the Navy Yard gates sits Kings County Distillery, the first Brooklyn whiskey distillery to open post-Prohibition. Run by architect Colin Spoelman and New York Magazine Deputy Editor David Haskell, along with a team of distillers, farmers and brewmasters, the distillery is churning out award-winning bottles of un-aged corn whiskey (moonshine), bourbon and chocolate flavored whiskey.

Kevin Herson has a unique use for his Harlem basement: an absinthe distillery. Fermenting tubs, herbs, hand-written labels, steal grinder, grain scale and all, Herson is the proprietor of Doc's All Natural Spirits, a yet-underground production line, inspired by 1920's prohibition laws and Belle Époque culture.
